Portsmouth uni: 'Metropolis' (2010)

The idea behind this project was to look at Portsmouth and its history and to present it, as a whole or a particular aspect of it, in our own chosen style. I chose to look into the struggle between nature and the constant urbanisation of the city. My research involved exploring the seafront as well as the city centre, analysing and reflecting on what's been neglected over the years and what's been done repair the damage done over the years. My research showed me just how neglected the seafront had been and how the modernisation of the city had been the councils focal point, not taking care to preserve nature and the history that came with it. This lead to my final idea which was to portray the city using nature and organic materials.

The top half shows the Spinnaker tower, a very iconic symbol of Pompey, recreated using trees, sumbolising nature taking back the heart of the city. The bottom half shows the urban chaos of the modern city coming out of the roots of the tree, again reflecting the emergance of nature from the clutter of the modern world.
