These are just some of my illustrations I am currently working on for my final year project. Its based on Fairy Tales, more specifically Red Riding Hood.

Portsmouth Uni: Zine

This was a group project where we had to create a zine based on a chosen theme/topic. My groups theme was 'pet hates' and so each of us created 3 images based on our hates. My three were 'Spoilt teenage girls', 'Cosmetic surgery' and 'Older women dressing and acting younger than their age'.







Portsmouth Uni: Social Awareness.

My theme for this project was 'Censorship' and the many ways it effects society and our culture. I focused on the censoring of free speech and how more and more of what people say is twisted and obscured by the media and governement to suit their needs.

Portsmouth Uni: Number Through Print.

The aim of this project was to create an image or series of images that involve or reference a number(s), doing so using print making techniques. I decided to base my project on religion, more specifically on the book 'Dante's Inferno' which is a poem about the medievil belief of the '9 stages of Hell'. Each stage made for different types of sinners with different punishments. I focused on the 9th circle, which was split into four regions - traitors to their fellow man, traitors to their country, traitors to their guests/hosts and the last of which was where lucifer was held.

Region 1: Sinners are frozen in ice with only their faces showing.

Region 2: Sinners body is in ice with their heads poking out so as to be lashed at by Lucifers wings.

Region 3: Sinners facial features are frozen over.

 

Portsmouth Uni (2011): Sequential.

The aim for this project was to create a series of images which created a sequence with some form of narrative. I chose to focus on a character I created and show a sequence of images at different stages of its life, from birth to death. The story behind the character is that he's dopey and slow but just wants to fit in wherever he goes in life. I added a simple rhyme to add to the narrative. (Click on images to enlarge).

I am chaos

Took a while but im pretty happy with it.

Random character design for a story I'm working on.

Portsmouth Uni: 'Methodology'

For this project we had to basically pick an animal, research it and build up a collection of work looking at the chosen animal and branching off that to create a final piece. I chose orangutans as my animal and started off by just looking at images of wild orangutans and dictionary definitions of them, then I chose 5 words to describe my animal; agile, animated, slothful, recluse and hairy. I used these as a starting point for my project.

Infants have a very strong bond with the mothers, stronger than that of humans so I looked into that and thought it would be interesting to see how I could portray that bond as an illustration.

Naturally I began to research evolution which was an interesting progression.

From here I began to look at the anatomy of oraguntans and their body movements.

Working on the body language and movement led onto animation and orangutans withing cartoons, the most famous being King Louie from the Jungle Book.

The facial expressions started to interest me. Orangutans are very expressive, both with their body and faces.

I also looked at the comic 'My monkeys name is Jenifer' for inspiration and over-the-top expressions.

For my final idea I wanted to go back and incorporate the 5 words that I had chosen, so I begane looking at ways to illustrate each of the words.

I wanted to represent each image in the same style so as to have them all as a series rather than individual pieces. I looked into ways of drawing orangutans and how to create a series of images that reflect each word but also stay consistent in terms of style and substance. After doing some research on the artist Don Kenn and his artistic style, I thought his drawing technique, combined with my own, would make for interesting images.

For my final piece I decided to place these images in real life situations that would reflect the words, then take pictures of them as though capturing them in their day to day lives.

The images are not brilliant quality but I like that it adds a sort of amateur quality to them, even if it wasnt of purpose.
